North Dakota United Highlights Heidi Heitkamp’s Support Among North Dakota Teachers and Public Employees
FARGO, N.D. – Today, thousands of North Dakota educators and public employees across the state endorsed U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp’s campaign for re-election. Citing her strong and consistent support of public education in North Dakota, North Dakota United – which represents 11,000 educators and public employees statewide – praised Heidi’s shared dedication to public service and commitment to the improvement of public education in North Dakota and beyond.
North Dakota United and its members took to social media to announce their support of Heidi. Below are some highlights:
The efforts of North Dakota United further underscore Heidi’s support in the education community – which was previously highlighted by the Heitkamp campaign’s announcement of “Teachers for Heidi,” an endorsement group chaired by educators throughout the state.
In the Senate, Heidi has been a loyal and passionate advocate for public education. After she was sworn in, Heidi made college affordability for North Dakota students an immediate priority, describing it as “the single issue that will unravel the entire economy if we don’t fix it.” After meeting with students and graduates at her alma matter to discuss solutions, Heidi supported legislation to cap interest rates and provide financial stability to college students and recent graduates. Later, Heidi co-sponsored a bill that would allow Americans with student loans to refinance their debt at lower interest rates, helping each and every student to get an education at the lowest cost possible. Finally, in 2017, Heidi took to the Senate floor to oppose the nomination of Betsy DeVos to serve as Secretary of Education, citing her desire to steer funding away from rural education and into private schools.
