Former Acting Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services, Mary Wakefield, Endorses Heidi Heitkamp for U.S. Senate
FARGO, N.D. – Today, Devils Lake-native and former Acting Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services Mary Wakefield endorsed Heidi Heitkamp for U.S. Senate. A former nurse and head of the University of North Dakota’s Center for Rural Health, Wakefield has been a lifelong advocate for quality, affordable care. In the Senate, Heidi has worked with both sides of the aisle on commonsense solutions to bring down the cost of health care, improve access in rural North Dakota and protect the almost 300,000 North Dakotans with pre-existing conditions.
“Health care is a tough issue, but nobody has taken a more commonsense approach than Heidi – she knows we need to put politics aside and work together to bring down costs for North Dakota families,” Wakefield said. “When I was at HHS, I heard from Heidi quite a bit – from protecting hospitals in rural communities to making the health care law work better for North Dakota. She was never shy about speaking up for her constituents when they needed a strong voice in Washington, even if it meant going against the grain. But she’s also a strong defender of the protections folks need to afford care. When politicians threatened seniors with an age tax and tried to gut protections for folks with pre-existing conditions, Heidi was always there for North Dakota and fought back. We deserve a senator like Heidi who works across the aisle to improve health care for North Dakotans, not just to score political points.”
